Citation and Record Verification for Briefs
We check your draft against its sources before you file.
Our approach
Citation, quotation, and record checks
Send us a draft brief, declaration, or other filing. Our system does the first pass, and our team compares the citations, quotations, and record references in the agreed draft with available sources. The register identifies what we checked, discrepancies, and sources we could not access. Counsel decides what to change.
Citations
We compare citations to cases, statutes, and rules with the available authorities, including the pinpoint references.
Record Cites
We compare record references with the cited pages and check whether those pages support the draft's description.
Quotations
We compare quotations with their available sources, including ellipses, brackets, and emphasis.
What You Receive
A Verification Register
A list of the passages we checked, their cited sources, and what we found: matched to the available source, a discrepancy, or a source we could not access. These results describe the scoped comparison, not an overall legal opinion.
Specific Findings
Findings identify the passage in the draft and the relevant source page. If a source is unavailable, the register says so.
Counsel Stays in Control
We report findings. We do not rewrite the argument. Counsel decides what to change and signs the filing. We don't give legal advice.
Before or After Drafting
We can check a finished draft, or check each section as it is written.
Illustrative verification report
These fictional examples explain the report format. They are not client work or results from a verification run. We agree on the report fields and checks for your assignment.
| Draft passage | Source | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| “The meeting began at 9 a.m.” | Fictional meeting notes, page 2 | Matched: the notes record a 9 a.m. start. |
| “The two payments totaled $250.” | Fictional ledger, page 4 | Discrepancy: $100 and $125 total $225. |
| “The attachment confirms delivery.” | Referenced attachment not supplied | Not checked: obtain the attachment before relying on the statement. |
Counsel reviews the findings and decides what to change. A source match does not determine admissibility, legal sufficiency, or subsequent treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you change the brief?
No. We report what we find. Counsel decides what to change.
What sources do you check against?
The cited authorities and record pages. During scoping, we confirm access to those sources and which checks are included. If a source is unavailable, the register says so.
What should we discuss during scoping?
Describe the draft or sections to check, cited materials, and deadline. We identify the document set, source access, human-review steps, and reporting format in the scope. Source comparison, citation formatting, and subsequent-history or negative-treatment checks are distinct tasks; the scope states which are included.
How long does it take?
We confirm the delivery date when we accept the scope. Rush is available, with the fee and date quoted with the scope.
Need help with your next matter?
Tell us the task, record volume, and deadline. We scope the work on a 30-minute call, run a conflict check, and confirm the quote and delivery date before starting.
